“A connection to the remote computer could not be established. "
With some older VPN servers, the error message instead advises:
“The port was disconnected. "
What Causes VPN Error 619?
When the computer attempts to establish a new connection to a VPN server or when it is suddenly disconnected from an active VPN session, this error message arises. The Windows VPN client begins the connection process and then typically pauses at the “verifying username and password” step for several seconds before the 619 message appears.
Different types of VPN clients may experience this error including those that use Point to Point Tunneling Protocol.
How to Fix VPN Error 619
To clear the error, try one of three solutions:
If two or more VPN clients are installed on the computer, ensure only one is running. Check for running applications and also for Windows services. Reboot the computer if necessary to ensure all other applications are stopped. Firewalls and antivirus programs that block access to the VPN ports may be running. Temporarily disable these programs to troubleshoot. Try other standard repairs and troubleshooting steps. Reboot the client computer. Delete and reinstall the VPN client configuration settings. Find another computer that has a working setup to compare your network configurations with the properly working computer, looking for any differences.
Intermittent network connectivity can generate 619 errors that do not reappear when you restart the client.
Other Related VPN Error Codes
Other kinds of VPN failures can occur that appear similar to VPN error 619:
VPN error 645: “There was an internal authentication error” occurs on obsolete versions of Windows (including Windows XP) when problems with the username or password prevent login. People most commonly trigger this error by entering an incorrect password on the client, or by having password encryption enabled. VPN error 800: “Unable to establish the VPN connection. " VPN Error 800 indicates the client is unable to reach the target VPN server over the network, but it doesn’t give any indication of why or when. In contrast, error 619 occurs only after the client reaches the server and attempts to complete the connection process. Users can trigger this error by specifying an invalid VPN server name, for example. VPN error 809: “The network connection between your computer and the VPN server could not be established because the remote server is not responding. " Clients report VPN error 809 if their attempts to communicate with the server are unsuccessful and exceed the time limit for a Windows VPN connection setup.
