The video stuttering and lagging issue in Microsoft Teams can occur due to several reasons, including poor internet connection, system resource limitation, and app-related issues. Here we show you how to troubleshoot the Microsoft Teams app for video lag in Windows 11.
1. Check Your Internet Connection
Poor Internet connectivity can cause the video to lag and stutter. You can use your ISP’s proprietary speed testing app to test your Internet speed. If not, third-party speed testing apps are also useful to check your Internet connection quality.
Alternatively, open the Microsoft Teams app on another device such as your smartphone or tablet. Check if the app works as intended or the issue continues. This will help you determine if the video lagging issue is due to a poor Internet connection or the desktop client.
If you determine the desktop client to have gone rogue, follow these steps to troubleshoot Microsoft Teams desktop app issues.
In case of a slower Internet connection, try disabling the custom background and other customization that uses additional bandwidth. Additionally, pause or stop streaming or downloading tasks during a video call.
While most modern systems can handle Teams live events, make sure your system meets the minimum system requirement to run Microsoft Teams.
2. Use the Call Health View to Monitor Call and Meeting
Microsoft Teams features a call and meeting monitoring feature Call Health View to identify video lag and other issues. In this view, you can monitor data, audio, and screen sharing on your network in real-time.
To open Call Health View, join a meeting and click the three-dots menu in the top left corner. Then, click on Call Health near the top of the menu. Microsoft Teams will show the call details in a right-side pane. Note that this feature is available on Microsoft Teams Work/School version only.
In the details pane, you can find stats for the Network, Audio, Video, and Screen Sharing features. You can learn more about how to read your call health stats on Microsoft’s support page.
3. Check for Microsoft Teams and Windows Update
Updating software is a common way to fix weird bugs and errors. By default, Microsoft Teams check for updates every two weeks, but you can also manually check and install updates from Settings.
To update Microsoft Teams:
Launch Microsoft Teams on your PC. Next, click the three-dots menu (Settings and more) in the top right corner beside the Profile name. Click on Check for updates. The app will check for new updates and install them if available. After the update is installed, relaunch Microsoft Teams and check if the video lagging problem is fixed.
To update Windows 11:
Press Win + I to open Settings. Open the Windows Update tab in the left pane. Click the Check for updates button. Windows will scan for pending updates and show all the available updates that you can install. Click on Download & Install to install the updates. Once installed, restart your PC and check for any improvements.
4. Update Your Intel Graphic Drivers
On Intel-powered machines, try updating the graphics drivers for the integrated Intel HD graphics to fix the problem. Issues with your display adapter driver can cause the Microsoft Teams app to lag during a video call.
To update the Intel HD Graphics device driver:
Press Win + X to open the WinX menu. Select Device Manager from the context menu. In Device Manager, expand the Display adapters section. Right-click on your Intel display adapter device and select Update Driver. Select Search automatically for drivers and let Windows find and install the pending updates for the device.
If no updates are available, go to the Intel drivers download page. Then, open the Graphics section and download the latest version of the Intel Graphics driver available for your system. For additional steps, follow our guide on updating graphics drivers in Windows.
5. Run Microsoft Teams Network Assessment Tool
Microsoft Teams Network Assessment lets you diagnose your network for performance and connectivity issues. It is a command-line tool that verifies network connectivity between the user location and a Microsoft relay server.
It is a handy utility for network administrators to diagnose network issues with Microsoft Teams in an organization. Follow these steps to run the Microsoft Teams Network Assessment tool:
Go to Microsoft Teams Network Assessment Tool page. Click the Download button to save the executable file to your PC. Run the executable file and follow on-screen instructions to complete the installation. Since this is a command-line tool, you will not find it in the recently installed apps list like the GUI apps. To run the tool, press Win + R to open the Run dialog. Paste the following path in the run box and click OK to navigate: %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft Teams Network Assessment Tool Here, double-click on the NetworkAssessmentTool. exe to launch the tool in Command Prompt. It will perform various connectivity checks instantly to determine if the relay servers are reachable with the UDP and port used by the app.
6. Reinstall Microsoft Teams
If the issue persists, reinstall Microsoft Teams to fix any issues triggered due to file corruption and other glitches.
To uninstall Microsoft Teams:
Press Win + I to open Settings. Next, open the Apps tab. Click on Apps & features in the right pane. Locate Microsoft Teams and click the three-dots menu. Select Uninstall and then confirm the action to uninstall the app. Next, download Microsoft teams for desktop and run the installer to install the app.
