Many users have reported facing screen tearing issues in Valorant. So, if you are also encountering the same problem, try the below solutions to troubleshoot the problem for good.
What Causes Screen Tearing?
The screen tearing issue mainly occurs when your monitor refresh rate is not in sync with the GPU frame rate. When you try to play a game at a frame rate higher than what your monitor can sustain, you are inviting a lot of big issues, one of which is screen tearing.
You will also face screen tearing when the game’s frame rate is lower than the display refresh rate. But in this case, you will primarily deal with the stuttering problem instead of occasional tearing.
The problem will also occur if you have an outdated graphics driver, misconfigured options in-game, and unsuitable system power settings. Luckily, you can quickly troubleshoot the problem by implementing the below fixes.
1. Adjust the Display Settings
Windows lets you manually adjust the display resolution of your monitor. But if you have configured the resolution to a value higher than your monitor can handle, you will face the screen tearing issue in Valorant.
The solution, in this case, is to set the display resolution to the recommended value. You can do this by following the below steps:
Open the Settings menu on your computer. Click System in the left panel. Choose Display. Click the Advanced display option under Related settings. Choose the Display adapter properties for the Display 1 option. Click the List All Modes button. Select the recommended value. It’s always the last option present on the list. Click OK. Click Apply > OK.
Reboot the game and check if you still face the screen tearing problem.
2. Change the Power Settings
Windows has three different power modes: best power efficiency, balanced and best performance. The best power efficiency mode is recommended when you want to save the system’s battery. And, when you want to do graphics-intensive tasks like playing games, it’s a good idea to switch to the best performance mode.
The best performance mode will configure your system to work at its highest capacity. It can also solve the screen tearing problem in Valorant.
Open the Settings menu and navigate to System > Power & battery. Click on the drop-down icon next to Power mode. Choose Best performance from the context menu.
Launch the game and check for the issue. If it continues, try the next solution in the list.
3. Update Graphics Driver
Outdated or corrupt graphics drivers can cause various issues in graphics-intensive games like Valorant. The best thing you can do in this case is to download the latest graphics driver update.
To update the graphics driver, follow the below instructions:
Open the Power menu using Win + X hotkeys. Choose Device Manager from the context menu. Double-click the Display adapters option to expand it. Right-click on the installed graphics driver and choose Update driver. Choose Search automatically for drivers in the window that crops up.
That’s it. Now, Windows will look for and download the latest graphics driver update. Once done, you can reboot your computer and check for the problem.
Windows’ driver updater doesn’t always work every time, however. If Windows fails to find new drivers, check out our guide on how to update your graphics driver for alternate methods.
4. Change In-Game Settings
One adjustment that has helped many users fix the screen tearing issue is configuring the in-game settings. The first thing you must enable in the settings menu is VSync. It makes sure that the monitor and GPU refresh rate is synchronized.
To enable VSync in Valorant, follow the below steps:
Open Valorant and go to Settings. In the Settings menu, choose Video. Switch to Graphics Quality. Click the On button next to VSync. Close the Settings menu.
The next thing you must configure in the settings menu is the Limit FPS option. You must disable the Limit FPS setting to solve the screen tearing problem. Here’s how:
Open Settings in Valorant and choose Video. In the General tab, click the Off button next to Limit FPS Always. You can also disable the Limit FPS on Battery, Limit FPS in Menus, and Limit FPS in Background options.
Next, relaunch the game and check if you still face the issue. If yes, try the next solution on the list.
5. Configure VSync in Your Graphics Driver
The next solution on the list is to configure VSync settings in your graphics driver. Here’s what you need to do if you have an Nvidia graphics card:
Open the Start menu by pressing the Win key. In the Search bar, type Nvidia Control Panel and press Enter. Choose Manage 3D settings from the left panel. Switch to Program settings. Click on the drop-down icon under Select a program to customize and choose Valorant from the list. Disable the Low latency mode and Max frame option in the Specify the settings for this program section. Click on the drop-down icon next to Vertical sync and choose Use the 3D application setting from the context menu. Click Apply.
If you have an AMD graphics card, follow the below instructions:
Open the AMD Radeon software. Click on the Gear icon at the top right corner. Switch to the Graphics tab. Click the drop-down icon next to Wait for vertical refresh and choose Off, unless application specifies option from the context menu.
There you have it, already to play Valorant without any screen tearing.
6. Reinstall Valorant
Are you still facing the screen tearing problem? Perhaps there’s some issue with the game file. The solution, in this case, is to reinstall the game.
Open the Control Panel, and navigate to Programs > Uninstall a program. Locate and right-click on Valorant. Choose Uninstall from the context menu. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the uninstallation process.
After that, visit Riot’s official website and download Valorant.
