If you encounter a one-off crash, you should be able to continue playing without issue. However, some players have said that the 0x887A0005 error repeatedly crashes their copy of Vanguard. As such, here is how you can fix Call of Duty: Vanguard’s 0x887A0005 error in Windows 10 and 11.
1. Start Call of Duty: Vanguard With Admin Rights
First, make sure Call of Duty: Vanguard has full access to files and resources in Windows by running the game with elevated administrative permissions. You’ll need to configure both the game and its Battle.net launcher to run with admin rights.
Here is how you can set Vanguard to start with elevated rights:
Open File Explorer by pressing Win + E. Bring up Vanguard’s installation folder. Right-click Vanguard Launcher in the game’s folder to select Properties. Click the Compatibility tab to access the configuration settings. Select the small box for the Run this program as administrator setting. Press Apply to save your selected compatibility options. Then you can click OK to close the properties window for Vanguard. Repeat those steps for the Battle. net Launcher. exe file in your Battle. net folder.
2. Set Vanguard’s Graphics to the Low Preset
Error 0x887A0005 can arise for players playing the game with overly high graphical settings for their PCs. If you’re not playing Vanguard on an especially high-spec PC, lowering its overall graphics preset could be a viable solution. Sure, the game won’t look so good, but at least then you might then be able to play it without issues. You can set Vanguard’s graphics preset to low like this:
Start your Call of Duty: Vanguard game. Press the game’s Settings button. Click the Graphics tab. Select the Quality tab. Then choose Low on the Quality Presets drop-down menu. Select the Apply Settings option.
3. Disable Texture Streaming
Disabling texture streaming has been an error 0x887A0005 solution for some Call of Duty: Vanguard players. To disable that option, open Vanguard’s Graphics tab as outlined in the preceding resolution.
Click On-Demand Texture Streaming within the display settings. Then select to turn off the On-Demand Texture Streaming option, and remember to apply the new setting.
4. Scan Vanguard’s Game Files
Error 0x887A0005 can be a consequence of corrupted Vanguard game files. In which case, Battle.net’s Scan and Repair utility for games could fix that issue for some players at least. This is how you can scan your Call of Duty: Vanguard game with this tool.
Launch the Battle. net game client for Vanguard. Click All Games at the top of Battle. net to select Call of Duty: Vanguard. Press the Options button on the Play option. Click Scan and Repair to verify the files for your Vanguard game.
Incidentally, the 0x887A0005 error message window includes a Scan and Repair option. When the game crashes, you can select that option on the error window. If that doesn’t resolve the issue for you, try selecting Scan and Repair within Battle.net.
5. Select the “System Managed Page File” Option in Windows
The System managed page file option will be selected by default unless you’ve changed Virtual Memory settings. If you have made some adjustments to page filing, it’s recommended that you select the System managed page file setting for playing Call of Duty: Vanguard. You can select that option as follows:
Press Win + S to open Windows Search. Input the keyword advanced system settings in your search tool’s text box. Select View advanced system settings from the search tool. Click Settings on the Advanced tab to bring up another window. Select the Advanced tab on the Performance Options window. Press the Change button to bring up Virtual Memory. Uncheck the Automatically manage page file size for all drives checkbox. Select the System managed size radio button if it’s not already selected. Click OK on the Virtual Memory window. Select Apply on the Performance Options window. Then restart your Windows PC.
6. Update Your Graphics Driver
Call of Duty: Vanguard packs in some fancy graphical effects and features. Such graphical enhancements might cause the 0x887A0005 error if the graphics driver on your PC is outdated.
As such, it’s a good idea to ensure your GPU has the latest available NVIDIA or AMD driver for it. Check out our guide on how to update your graphics drivers for more information on how to do this.
7. Disable Unnecessary Third-Party Background Programs and Services
If too many programs are running in the background, there might not always be sufficient system RAM available for Vanguard. Disabling background programs will free up system resources for Call of Duty: Vanguard.
Clean-booting Windows is one way you can disable background programs and services by removing them from the startup. Here is how to perform a clean boot with the System Configuration tool.
Start the System Configuration utility with a method in our guide for opening MSConfig. Click the Load startup items checkbox to deselect that selected option. Select the Hide all Microsoft services setting on System Configuration’s Services tab. Press Disable all to uncheck the checkboxes for all the other third-party services still listed. Click Apply to set the new boot configuration. Select OK and Restart to finish.
Play Call of Duty: Vanguard after clean-booting Windows. Does error 0x887A0005 still occur? If not, that might be because clean booting made more system resources available.
The 0x887A0005 crashing might return if you restore your original boot configuration. Nevertheless, you can restore the original boot settings by reselecting the Load startup items box in the System Configuration tool. Select Enable all to re-enable the disabled services.
8. Reinstall Call of Duty: Vanguard
If error 0x887A0005 persists after applying the possible resolutions above, you might need to reinstall Call of Duty: Vanguard to replace its files. That means you’ll have to download the game again, which might take a few hours.
You can reinstall Vanguard from within the Battle.net launcher like this:
Open Battle. net’s window. Click All Games to select Vanguard. Select Options on the right of the game’s Play button. Click Uninstall to remove the game. Restart Windows to ensure Vanguard is entirely uninstalled. Then reopen Battle. net, and select the Install option for Call of Duty: Vanguard.
If you have a laptop, plug it in to ensure its battery won’t run out before Vanguard has fully downloaded and reinstalled.
