Steps On How To Fix Motion Blur Effect In Games?

Method 1: Increase The Refresh Rate

All monitor screens’ have an inbuilt feature known as Refresh Rate, which decides the number of times and the time duration, the picture displayed will be refreshed. The standard default set for all screens is 60Hz, which means that a moving object will stay in one position for only 1/60th sec and then move to another spot. But the human eye cannot figure out the wait of such a small timing, and the image appears to be moving.

Example of a Blur scene from a Game.

Gaming monitors have higher refresh rates like 90Hz, 120Hz, 144Hz and even higher. This means that an image will move even faster from point to point, and the motion blur effect will be reduced. To achieve this, all you need to do is to increase the frames per second and reduce the motion blur in games to a great extent. This setting is available through your Windows operating system after you connected your monitor to the PC. The steps to check the refresh rate are listed below:

Step 1: Open Settings on the computer by pressing Windows + I on the keyboard.

Step 2:  Select System from the various options and then click on Display in the left panel.

Step 3: Now scroll down and locate Advanced Display Settings. Choose Display Adapter Properties for your monitor.

Step 4: Now, in the new dialog window, click on the drop-down under Screen Refresh Rate and select a higher number. The default will always be set at 60Hz.

Method 2: Increase The Frame Rate Of Your Game

The next step to fix the motion blur effect in games is to check the settings in your game console. If you are playing with Steam and then you would have to launch the Console and check the settings to identify the Frame Rate and change it according to your monitor settings. For example, if you have changes your Frame rate to 120 Hz, then the Game settings must be configured to deliver the output at 120 frames per second. Anything lower than that with high monitor refresh rate will create the motion blur effect while playing the game.

The steps for changing the game frame rate will be different for different games. The idea is to launch the game first and then access the display settings and look for Game Frame rate or Refresh Rate and set it with accordance to the Monitor Refresh Rate set in Method 1.

Method 3: Check the Game’s Motion Blur Settings

Some of the games may contain a Motion Blur settings option which would be enabled by default to provide cinematic effect during level climaxes or other important moments like boss battles. This setting also helps to fulfil the requirement of display with a low frame rate. However, no matter how noble the intentions of the game developers are, these settings can create the motion blur effect in games.

Apart from Motion Blur Settings, you must also check other settings and toggle them on/off and check the result. I will not be able to describe all the settings as they might vary for different games, but another reason could also be the Monitor’s response time which is measured in milliseconds. This setting is responsible for the delay in response from your keyboard store to the change occurring on your monitor. The slow response occurs due to a process called Ghosting.

The effect of Ghosting can be reduced by changing the on-screen display settings. There are other settings to consider like  Dynamic Accuracy, Motion Pixel Response Time, Extreme Low Motion Blur, Ultra Low Motion Blur and many others as well. Now you may not find each setting in every game as they are customized as per game developers. You can check, change and toggle them and observe the effects. Do not change all settings at once for you might see strange objects and double images on your screen and ruin everything just like I did for the first time.

Method 4: Update Your Drivers

The final resolution to fix the motion blur effect in Windows 10 is to update your drivers to maintain smooth communication between your game and hardware. The updated drivers communicate with the operating system, which in turn receives instructions from the application like your game and then passes on these instructions to the hardware. To ensure that your computer is running at the optimal speed with enhancing performance, try using a driver updater software and check for the status of your drivers fortnightly.

There are many driver updater software available, but I prefer to use Smart Driver Care which was recommended to me by an IT professional. Ever since I have been using it, I have observed that I do not face any issues related to hardware and software conflicts and have been experiencing a smooth functioning system.
